Thanks for all the chunky bacon

Today I was award the silver Ruby badge on StackOverflow, one of only 164 people to be awarded it (I know, I feel so special!) It was around 5 years ago when I decided to learn either Ruby or Python, and to be fair in my choice I ignored the large O’Reilly Python book sitting on my desk and looked on the web for some Ruby stuff, reasoning that I would always have the book lying around so why not give Ruby a look first. Somehow, I found why’s (poignant) Guide to Rubyhttp://mislav.uniqpath.com/poignant-guide/. It was crazy. It was dark. It was ridiculous, and it featured foxes talking about bacon. It even namechecks Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci. Imagine Ren and Stimpyhttps://youtu.be/qwo6eZ52qLA trying to teach you to program and you’ll have the right idea. It was almost zero help in actually learning the language but it captured my imagination, and what is the point of a tool for creating things if it makes you feel drab? A painter has their brushes, a footballer their boots, and I have my Ruby.

Thank you, _why, for starting with the most important thing, inspiration. I still haven’t opened that Python book, I’ll get around to it…
